Job Summary:

The Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL) seeks an energetic, innovative, and dedicated student for the position of Digital Metadata Assistant. This is an excellent opportunity to work with collaborative and enthusiastic colleagues who are dedicated to building services for digital libraries and archives. Hosted at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, along with the rest of the MWDL staff, this position serves the Mountain West region as a key part of the MWDL Service Hub for the Digital Public Library of America, which aggregates metadata from partnering libraries, museums, and archives in five states for sharing both regionally via the MWDL portal at and nationally via the Digital Public Library of Ameriaca (DPLA) portal at

While this position focuses primarily on assisting with quality control of metadata of collections harvested into the MWDL portal, according to the standards and guidelines listed in the Dublin Core MWDL Application Profile, it will also provide an opportunity to work on some social media promotions for MWDL news, content, and collaborations. Work across organizational lines is encouraged to support and strengthen services within the MWDL community.


One year of computer operations experience or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Previous customer services experience is preferred.

This position is responsible for analyzing data that has been entered to describe digitized library materials, that are in text and image formats; records statistics for items processed; and performs other projects as they arise, such as helping collection partners in updating existing digital collection records, in accordance with standards specified in MWDL's Dublin Core Application Profile. This position is also responsible for researching copyright and permissions; checking for errors and missing information in digital records marked for aggregation, and will the MWDL Director and Metadata Librarian with aggregation workflows and audits.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using a computer and Windows software; and willingness and ability to learn and use new software as required. English language skills (grammar, spelling, written and oral) a must. Knowledge of and interest in the history of the Western United States, especially Utah, is preferred. Knowledge of, or experience with, metadata cataloging would be a plus. This position requires a person who is well-organized and can keep track of multiple assignments in a professional library environment.
