POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT 
TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

TITLE:  Metadata Librarian – Assistant Librarian

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  This tenure track position is responsible for the development of metadata standards and best practices for digital materials acquired by the libraries and also participates in providing access to library materials acquired by the University Libraries and contributes to the development of departmental policies and procedures.  The position reports to the Digital Resources Library Librarian.  The incumbent is also expected to engage in scholarly pursuit and other professional activities in accordance with Texas Tech Library’s standards for promotion and tenure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains excellent written and oral communication with library staff.  Disseminates information that is clear to all levels of library staff in the form of email updates, attendance at staff meetings and other appropriate means.
  • Works closely with the Unit Lead, appropriate teams and departments to establish and refine associated workflows.
  • Investigates, evaluates, and recommends metadata systems and standards for use with digital collections.  Leads the ongoing development of metadata standards and best practices.  Provides recommendations on the types of metadata required for effective access to digital objects.  Tracks developments of metadata standards and facilitates access to resources through metadata creation.
  • Implements suitable metadata schemes for digital projects and develops necessary crosswalks.  Ensures quality, consistency, and ease of access to digital objects.
  • Creates templates and other tools to support metadata creation for digital objects.
  • Assists in setting policies, priorities and practices for the production and management of digital content including internal workflows and procedures.
  • Provides training in the area of metadata implementation and creation for digital objects.
  • Participates in the development, design, deployment and support of digitization.  Works with other college constituencies in support of the creation, archiving and dissemination of digital content.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures, project planning and staff training as needed.
  • Stays abreast of current developments in library issues through active participation in professional organizations and workshops.  Monitors professional trends in assigned areas and makes recommendations in these areas.
  • Serves on library committees and cross functional teams as assigned.
  • Writes reports and prepares other documentation as needed which support the Digital Resources Library area.
  • Assists with special projects as needed.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required:  Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program or international equivalent.  Preferred:  Knowledge of national cataloging standards including MARC21, AARC2/RDA, LCSH, Dublin Core and other emerging descriptive metadata standards; knowledge of metadata implementation and management techniques, specifically in the context of Dublin Core. Strong interpersonal skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills and training abilities. Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, MS Office Suite, or other productivity software; the ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively both as a team member and independently to promote teamwork among colleagues at all levels. Familiarity with a national bibliographic utility such as OCLC, knowledge of XML and common metadata schemes (such as MARC, Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core) highly preferred as well as technology skills, such as web page creation/development.
