Archives Specialist -- University of California, Merced

Under the supervision of a Librarian, the Archives Specialist applies advanced professional concepts to accession, arrange, describe, and catalog collections using established metadata and cataloging standards. Prioritizing researcher use and access, the specialist is responsible for establishing baseline administrative, physical, and intellectual control over acquisitions.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Inventories, assesses, stabilizes, arranges, and describes collections of various sizes, formats, and complexity. Identifies preservation and conservation needs for materials in all formats and establishes requirements for housing and treatment. Works with vendors for special cataloging or preservation needs.

  • Prepares materials for digitization and researcher access; creates and reviews metadata. Creates and maintains encoded finding aids, metadata, and MARC records in the Library’s online discovery systems according to current national standards and best practices.

  • Creates and contributes to policies, procedures, workflows, training manuals, and project planning, including determining resources required to process, rehouse, and preserve collections as appropriate.

  • Provides quality assurance and monitors metrics and resource use, including providing statistical reports.

  • Maintains inventories of supplies. Hires, trains, and directly supervises student assistants.

  • Assists researchers in the use of collections. Provides reference and public services support as needed.

  • Serves on campus and UC Libraries systemwide committees and groups as assigned; performs other duties as assigned.
