The University of Houston invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Libraries and Elizabeth D. Rockwell Chair. The University seeks a dynamic, visionary leader for the UH Libraries who will advance the University’s mission of research and teaching by ensuring the provision of outstanding and innovative library services to all its users.
The Dean of Libraries serves as the chief executive of the Libraries, with responsibility for oversight of all administrative activities, including budget and personnel management. The Dean provides programmatic and strategic leadership to the Libraries and plays a critical role in the Libraries’ development activities. The Dean represents the Libraries within the University, and at the local, state, and national levels. The Dean reports directly to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and is a member of the Council of Deans.
The UH Libraries comprises the MD Anderson Library and three embedded subject libraries on campus, the William R. Jenkins Architecture, Design, & Art Library, the Health Sciences Library, and the Music Library. The University Libraries currently employs more than 69 professionals and 100 FTE support staff. The UH Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, the HathiTrust, the Council on Library and Information Resources, the Digital Library Federation, and the Texas Digital Library. The Libraries enjoys an endowment of over $7 million, including four endowed positions. The UH Libraries’ 2017-2021 Strategic Plan reflects the University’s top priorities and positions the Libraries to be an essential contributor to these priorities.
The University of Houston is a publicly supported university, enrolling over 45,000 students in 15 colleges and schools that offer 108 masters and 46 doctoral degree programs. Ranked among the best colleges in America, UH is home to award-winning faculty, innovative research centers, one of the most diverse student populations in the nation, and alumni who have become international leaders in their fields. Within the past decade, the University has achieved elevation to Tier One research university status, was awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, established a College of Medicine in 2018, and improved graduation rates 10 points in 10 years. Currently in the third year of a capital campaign, UH has raised more than $1 billion.
The next Dean of Libraries and Rockwell Chair will bring to this role significant and progressive leadership experience gained in a comprehensive research or university library; a clear understanding of the major challenges facing research university libraries today; a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in all aspects of library services and operations; a proven commitment to developing librarians and staff; strong communication skills; knowledge of fiscal management and fundraising; and a record of professional service, and of research and publication, to support appointment to an endowed chair. A master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or its equivalent is required.
