The primary mission of the Special Collections and Archives Division is to collect, preserve, provide discovery and access to, and promote, interpret, and instruct in the use of our materials. Special Collections and Archives documents the history, culture, and physical environment of the city of Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada region, the global gaming industry, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Our collections include manuscripts, books, photographs, periodicals, maps, architectural drawings, oral history interviews, media, the University archives, born-digital records, and other cultural artifacts. Significant collecting areas are: gaming and gambling (including an internationally recognized rare book collection of gaming history); regional community groups and organizations; the Nevada Women’s Archive; Las Vegas entertainment and the arts; Las Vegas and urban resort architecture; mining and railroads; the American West; the Hoover Dam; and the culinary arts (including an international menu collection). UNLV Special Collections and Archives was recently the recipient of a 5-million-dollar endowment that will fund a future position, the Beverly Rogers Rare Books Curator. The division is comprised of three departments: Special Collections Technical Services, Special Collections Public Services, and Digital Collections. It also includes the Libraries’ preservation unit and conservation lab, and two specialized academic research centers: the Center for Gaming Research and the Oral History Research Center. Staff includes 9 academic faculty positions, 2 administrative faculty positions, 4 classified positions, 10-15 student assistants, and grant-funded contract positions.


The culture of the Division of Special Collections and Archives is deeply rooted in service to its users: in person, online, and through instruction and educational outreach. The Division accomplishes this mission through building and interpreting collections; creating, transforming, and sharing robust metadata; implementing and adapting technologies to improve collection management and discovery; preserving and providing access to physical and digital materials; partnering with faculty in classroom instruction in the use and analysis of primary sources; collaborating regionally and nationally; and through proactive community outreach that promotes the role of Special Collections and its research centers in documenting, preserving, and engaging the community in its history.


The Division works closely with every library division/department to integrate special collections and archives into all library services and functions.

ROLE of the POSITION

UNLV University Libraries seeks applications for the Digital Collections Workflows Supervisor and Lab Manager. This position is the technical lead for the UNLV Libraries Digitization Lab and is responsible for managing and coordinating projects and working with internal and external contacts to provide digitization services for prioritized projects. They will oversee the complex operational duties required to support reformatting and metadata creation operations for multiple formats of cultural heritage materials (examples include: photographs, manuscript collections, maps, transparent materials, etc.).


The Digital Collections Workflows Supervisor and Lab Manager, under the general direction of the department head, will provide support to the Head, Digital Collections to efficiently coordinate project scanning by aligning technology, equipment, and human resources with department priorities. They will consult on and implement work plans for large-scale digitization projects using specialized imaging equipment and software. This work will include regular consultation with Special Collection department heads to answer technical questions, provide appropriate timelines for projects, and write procedural documentation.


Responsibilities

  • Manage the digitization lab equipment schedule and provide technical support in order to offer digitization services for prioritized projects

  • Assists Head of Digital Collections with planning digitization timelines, digitization costs, assist in justifying budget requests, and staffing for grant applications

  • Responsible for meeting assigned digitization project deadlines and creating work assignments according to project priorities

  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of up to 5 departmental student assistants


This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement in accordance with the UNLV Flexible Work Policy and is evaluated on a case by case basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an earned Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university by the date of appointment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise staff effectively with a minimum of 1-3 years of supervisory experience, including hiring, onboarding, training, determining workloads, delegating responsibilities, providing direction, coaching, mentoring, and monitoring and evaluating job performance.

  • Knowledge of common library and archives best practices for digital imaging and metadata creation

  • Ability to communicate and advocate for resources needs, negotiate priorities, and propose solutions for complex problems

  • Exhibits outstanding effective listening, analytical, organizational and time management skills.

  • 1-3 years of experience working on a technology or professional library team within a cultural heritage organization (library, archives, museum, gallery, historical society, etc.)


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3- 5 years of experience working in academic library special collections

  • 1-3 years of experience creating documentation, training materials, and delivering training sessions in multiple formats

  • Digital imaging expertise (digital cameras, large-scale digitization, digital photography) and experience using scanning equipment and software, digital photography equipment and software, and photo management programs (Capture One)

  • Experience working on data clean up and database projects

  • Experience applying metadata standards (Dublin Core) for digital collections

  • Advanced Excel Skills

  • Participation in diversity, equity and inclusion work


SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, Administrative Faculty position at a Grade B. Minimum salary is $50,000. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
