PROFILE of the UNLV SCHOOL of MEDICINE and HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY

UNLV School of Medicine (SoM) is a recently accredited world-class center for allopathic medical education, patient care, and research that prepares Nevada’s doctors with the most innovative and technologically advanced forms of medical training while serving the health care needs of a diverse and urban population through community partnerships. UNLV SoM is creating clinical, education, and research programs in cardiology, neuroscience, mental health and addiction, cancer, and orthopedics. Its innovative, problem-based curriculum centers on the importance of relationships in health care and will foster long-term connections between students and faculty, health care professionals, patients, families, and the community. Students learn how to provide compassionate care in teams of health professionals including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, physical therapists, social workers, occupational therapists, and others in the pursuit of the best patient outcomes and satisfaction at the lowest cost.

The Health Sciences Library is currently in two locations on the developing Academic Health Center Campus. The HSL incorporates cutting edge technology while remaining high-touch as a partner in student learning and in support of research. Authoritative collections are being built and delivered whenever possible, in electronic formats enabling access on multiple mobile device platforms. Library faculty are partners in student learning, embedded to support evidence-based, interdisciplinary discovery of the latest research information. The Health Sciences Library (HSL) will be part of UNLV SoM’s first academic building and is designed to support the SoM faculty, staff, medical students, and physician trainees located on the evolving health sciences campus.

ROLE of the POSITION

UNLV University Libraries seeks nominations and applications for an innovative and collaborative tenure-track/tenured faculty member to serve as the Director, Health Sciences Library (HSL). Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Director, Health Sciences Library will lead a dynamic and extensive suite of services that fosters education, research, student success, and community engagement efforts for a diverse student population within a growing research university. The primary focus of this position is on leadership of HSL, with a strong liaison role to the School of Medicine, building SoM stakeholder relationships, developing curriculum support, student learning, and research support.

The Director, Health Sciences Library is a key member of the leadership team of both the UNLV University Libraries as well as the UNLV SoM. We seek an experienced health sciences librarian with a strong vision for the centrality of the library in learning, research, and community engagement. The successful candidate will be responsible for transitioning to a new 21st century health sciences library. They will be responsible for managing the library and will supervise a team of library faculty and staff consisting of four Faculty Librarians, who plan and deliver a variety of instructional programs, collections, and services; and two Library Technicians. Such work will ensure that users have access to the informational resources and possess the life-long learning skills required to succeed as medical professionals.

The Director, Health Sciences Library will initiate and support diversity goals for the Libraries that include services to a broadly diverse student population, recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and staff, and inclusive leadership. This will support existing equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts at UNLV and in the University Libraries, such as the Libraries' recent "We Need to Talk: Conversations on Racism" forums, and its implementation of "Recommendations For Diverse Recruitment" developed by the Libraries' Inclusion and Equity Committee.

As part of the UNLV University Libraries, the HSL is supported through a centralized infrastructure and shared services. The Director, Health Sciences Library works closely with main campus colleagues on programs, services, technology, and collections. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude; will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams, building partnerships within the Libraries, the University, the SoM, and in the outside community; and will be committed to engage in scholarly activities and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with the Libraries and University’s standards for promotion and tenure.

Responsibilities

  • Provides collaborative leadership to advance our values and strategic directions for research, instruction and community engagement activities.

  • Leadership and oversight of functional areas and staff in the Health Sciences Library, including: strategic planning, budgeting, facilities management, organizational development, change management, and assessment.

  • Leads HSL with an emphasis on empathy, cultural humility, inclusion, approachability, and respect.

  • Collaboratively leads, empowers, and supports HSL Faculty Librarians, professional, classified, and student employees.

  • Coordinates strategic and annual planning for HSL and oversees implementation in support of Libraries' Strategic Plan and SoM Strategic Plan.

  • Directly supervises 4 FTE academic faculty and 2 Library Technicians.

  • Participates in space planning efforts for the new Medical Education Building to evolve in response to next-generation technologies, user expectations, and patterns in learning and research collaboration.

  • Coordinates and collaborates with Libraries' other Division Directors for shared responsibilities and integration of public services and research support with all library operations.

  • Works with Library Technologies Division staff to plan for introduction of new technology in services and operations.

  • Serves as a member of the Libraries’ Leadership Team, Library Council, and other management groups as appropriate.

  • Serves on appropriate SoM committees and attends Dean’s Leadership Team meetings.

  • Establishes and sustains an ongoing service and scholarship record in accordance with UNLV Library Faculty Bylaws and university tenure and promotion procedures. All library faculty are supported with professional development funding, and research leave is available. Additionally, UNLV faculty are not unionized, but the university has a shared governance model; faculty are represented in the Faculty Senate and supported by the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Faculty Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment. Experience considered is not limited to public services areas; transferable skills or experience will be considered.

  • Experience in working in health administration, clinics, hospitals, social work, or nursing.

  • Experience managing other employees.

  • Demonstrated understanding of emerging technologies.

  • Experience in developing and implanting strategic plans in collaboration with partners and stakeholders.

  • Additional graduate degree in a relevant program.

  • Scholarship and service record at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (or equivalent rank) in a health sciences professional area.

SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track/tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate (Rank III, tenured-track/tenure) or Full Professor (Rank IV, tenure). Minimum salary is $80,000. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding. Pursuant to Assembly Bill (AB) 3 passed by the Nevada State Legislature during the 31st Special Legislative Session, employees are required to take furlough at a 4.6 percent monthly reduction in compensation from January 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021.
