The School of Medicine Library (SOML) was established in 2017 as part of an effort to create a new medical school in Southern Nevada. SOML was established as a mostly digital library with nearly 97% of library resources primarily online. As a division of UNLV Libraries, SOML falls within the scope of the university library system and directly reports to the Dean of Libraries. SOML primarily supports the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV (KSOM) which offers both an undergraduate medical education program comprised of medical students and a graduate medical education program comprised of residents and fellows. Each year KSOM welcomes 60 new medical students and approximately 80 residents and fellows in over 20 post-graduate programs. In support of the efforts to build physician capacity in Southern Nevada, SOML partners with KSOM faculty and staff to provide instruction, library programming, and access to library resources and services with a team of two library academic faculty, two staff, and eight student assistants at two locations within the Las Vegas Medical District.

ROLE of the POSITION

We welcome applications for an engaged and talented librarian to serve as a liaison to the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV (KSOM) with a focus on Graduate Medical Education (GME) and research support to join our growing organization of experienced faculty librarians and staff members who support teaching, learning, research and creative endeavors at one of the nation's newest medical libraries. Reporting to the Director of the School of Medicine Library (SOML), the incumbent will act as the University Libraries’ primary point of contact for GME faculty and residents.


This role is highly collaborative, and must be an active relationship builder and excellent communicator with the ability to work cross-organizationally in relaying and providing research resources/support of SOML and UNLV Libraries’ services. Collaborations will include working with KSOM faculty, residents, fellows, and research service providers within the Libraries. Successful candidates will also be engaged in developing strong instructional skills who can integrate library services, resources, and critical thinking praxis into graduate medical education.


This position will support clinical residents, and fellows practicing at hospitals throughout the Greater Las Vegas community, so a keen interest in outreach for distance learners and effective online education is highly encouraged. As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities, including publication, and to provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement instruction sessions, both in-person and online, for GME residents, fellows and faculty on topics such as scholarly activities, evidence-based practice, evidence synthesis, critical analysis, and research support

  • Lead research support efforts and outreach including working with UNLV Libraries counterparts to foster scholarship opportunities within KSOM

  • Attend KSOM Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) meetings, journal club, and other functions as the library’s representative

  • Foster relationships and build strategic partnerships with GME faculty, staff, residents and fellows through outreach to individual programs

  • Collaborate in the creation and development of marketing and promotional materials for SOML resources and services

  • Collaborate with the SOML Team, KSOM and UNLV Libraries partners to develop library programming or workshops across KSOM divisions

  • Provide assistance for education, research and reference support for students and faculty in the Health Sciences Division as needed


This position may be eligible for a flexible work arrangement in accordance with the UNLV Flexible Work Policy and is evaluated on a case by case basis.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an earned Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.

  • Experience with online instructional design or teaching in the health sciences or biomedicine

  • Experience with research support or scholarly communications in the health sciences or biomedicine

  • Experience providing library outreach services

  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to a changing environment

  • Competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are broadly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of critical analysis and evidence-based practice in the health sciences or biomedicine

  • Familiarity of evidence synthesis and systematic review practices in health sciences

  • Familiarity with biomedical or health information trends, tools, and resources

  • Experience in biomedical, informatics, or research-driven environments


SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant (Rank II, tenure-track). Minimum salary is $65,000. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon the labor market. The position is contingent upon funding.
