The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 30,000 undergraduate students, over 11,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. With a collection of more than 13 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.
The Head of Preservation for the UC Berkeley Library is a national resource for preservation of library collections. Reporting to the Head of Collection Services Division, the Head of Preservation is responsible for leading UC Berkeley Library's programs and services that anticipate and address the preservation and conservation needs of the UC Berkeley Library's circulating, digital, and special collections and continuing Berkeley's leadership in the broader preservation and library communities. This position leads the Preservation Department through program oversight, policy development, management of budget, and supervision of personnel. This position also works closely as a partner with the UC Berkeley Library's Digital Library Program (DLP).
RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Develop, lead, and administer programs and services that anticipate and respond to future and current preservation and conservation needs of the Berkeley Libraries' circulating, digital, and special collections including materials in all formats.
Provide strategic direction and oversight for specialized preservation and conservation units, including education, environmental monitoring, emergency preparedness, collections care (for general/circulating collections), and for special collections including the Bancroft Library, the East Asian Library, and the Music Library.
Demonstrate accountability and creativity in building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and foster an environment of innovation and continuous improvement.
Build and develop critical capabilities throughout the organization through strategic hiring, staff development, and performance management.
Lead and guide the Berkeley Library community in implementing preservation and conservation best practices, including reviewing the long-term effectiveness of existing techniques and practices, and undertake continuous improvement of user-focused services.
Foster an environment that promotes accountability, high performance, staff engagement and diversity through a sense of purpose and spirit of cooperation; set standards of excellence that inspire and motivate employees and collaborators.
Manage a complex budget of $1 million, commit funds and oversee expenditures that support overall Berkeley Library priorities.
Supervise department personnel needs including hiring, performance evaluation, recognition, discipline, training, scheduling and use of accrued time off, and assignment of work priorities.
Working with Library Development, contribute expertise and intellectual content to University and Library fundraising campaigns and development through grant proposal writing, fundraising, donor relations, and stewardship activities.
Collaborate with the Library's Digital Library Program (DLP) acting as a partner and consultant on digital preservation issues.
Cultivate, build, and promote library-wide collaborations meeting service needs through active engagement with colleagues and heads across the Berkeley Library system, including Access Services, Library Information Technology Services, Digital Lifecycle Program, Subject Specialty Libraries, Bancroft Library, special collections such as Music and East Asian Library, and Affiliated Libraries to ensure efficient and effective workflows to meet Library and units needs.
Coordinate with stakeholders among the faculty and research communities inside and outside of Berkeley to ensure scholarly integrity of preservation in all formats.
Represent the Library Preservation Department on relevant Library and Berkeley campus committees and working groups.
Represent the Berkeley Library in national and international associations; participate in national and international preservation and conservation programs; monitor current participation and recommend future participation in collaborative initiatives.
Other duties may be assigned.
This is a non-represented librarian position. UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Librarian advancement is partially based upon professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC system, and profession.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Advanced degree.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start): Minimum of three years experience.
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent international degree.
Minimum of ten years' experience, with six to eight years directly related and progressively responsible experience leading professional preservation and conservation, preferably in an academic environment.
Minimum of three years supervisory experience.
Experience managing a complex budget with emphasis on financial planning and analysis.
Demonstrated technical expertise in one or more areas of preservation, in any format, analog or digital.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with emerging digital preservation issues, tools, standards, and best practices.
Experience and knowledge of current and emerging principles and practices of data curation and long-term digital preservation.
Track record in leading high-performing teams and in spearheading change.
Ability to identify and implement strategic priorities, preferably in an academic environment.
Extensive project management experience and supervision of employees
Demonstrated success in managing change and building and managing new policies and processes.
Ability to manage multiple complex activities in a time-sensitive environment under pressure and handle difficult and confidential issues with integrity.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively influence, persuade, and promote the organization's work internally and externally.
Track record in developing successful grant proposals, current-use and endowment fundraising, and stewardship.
