ROLE of the POSITION

UNLV University Libraries seeks nominations and applications for an innovative and collaborative tenure-track/tenured faculty member to serve as the Head, Scholarly Communication & Data Services.

UNLV’s recent designation as a Research I, Very High Research Activity University (Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education) highlights the changing direction of the University with a new and growing emphasis on the research, scholarship and creative activities of its faculty and students. This direction presents exciting opportunities for the University Libraries to lead, partner on, and contribute to institutional aspirations and strategic initiatives. To better support this climate of innovation, in which faculty and students produce high-quality, widely disseminated, and influential research, the University Libraries will implement an organizational restructuring. to create a new Scholarly Communication & Data Services department. By aligning expertise in this new department, the University Libraries will establish organizational leadership for the development of programs and tools that support UNLV researchers in creating, sharing and demonstrating the impact of their work. Existing and future programmatic areas of focus for the department will include:

  • Open Scholarship and Publishing, including oversight of the Institutional Repository

  • GIS

  • Data Visualization

  • Data Preparation (manipulation and processing)

  • Data Literacy

  • Digital Humanities

  • Data Management

  • The Carpentries

  • Reputation Management

  • Research Impact

UNLV Libraries is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and collaborative librarian to establish the Scholarly Communication & Data Services department. An intentional decision has been made to wait until the incumbent is in place before creating the department in order to facilitate unified team development under the leadership of this role.

The Scholarly Communication & Data Services department will be part of the Collections, Acquisitions and Discovery (CAD) division. This will utilize existing Division expertise in scholarly communication, repository management and research impact and build on that foundation to strengthen support for UNLV researchers. Reporting to the Director of the CAD division, the incumbent will establish the department and develop direction, vision, goals and priorities for Scholarly Communication & Data Services

Key responsibilities and expectations for this position will include:

  • Establish, articulate, document, and maintain departmental vision, strategy, direction and goals

  • Lead and support a growing team of library staff responsible for the programming and services of Scholarly Communication & Data Services. The department will initially consist of the incumbent and the current staff of the Scholarly Communication Initiatives department (https://www.library.unlv.edu/about/unlv-libraries-org-chart.pdf). There are longer term plans for two additional positions focused on data visualization and GIS, and digital scholarship/digital humanities. These plans are dependent on funding.

  • Lead the development of a robust and sustainable program of services that support the needs of UNLV researchers through a collaborative approach that engages with Libraries and UNLV stakeholders as appropriate.

  • Work cross-organizationally to develop effective working relationships and communication channels with key stakeholders. This will include University Libraries departments such as the Library Liaison Program, Educational Initiatives, Health Sciences Library, and Digital Collections, and partners across the University including the Division of Research and Economic Development, and Office of Faculty Affairs as well as faculty, students and administrators from across the campuses.

  • Continuously assess and evaluate programs, services, policies, and processes of the department to ensure they are responsive to the evolving needs and priorities of UNLV researchers.

  • Remain up-to-date on challenges, opportunities, and issues facing research libraries and develop relevant Scholarly Communication & Data Services in response

  • As a faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to engage in scholarly activities and to provide service to the university, community, and profession in accordance with UNLV and University Libraries standards for promotion and tenure.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an earned Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.

  • Five years of experience in an academic setting

  • Experience providing programmatic services in one or more areas of responsibility of this position

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new initiatives, including establishing and articulating vision and goals

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply new technologies

  • Knowledge of current digital scholarship and scholarly communication trends

  • Knowledge of research data management and data services trends within libraries

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, foster collaboration and lead teams across an organization

  • Demonstrated ability to engage and build partnerships with University stakeholders external to the library

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills, and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects

Preferred

  • Demonstrated teaching experience

  • Experience with technology, methods and tools related to the programmatic areas of focus for the position

  • Evidence of creative thinking about library services and technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully supervise, mentor, and train staff

SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track/tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant (Rank II, tenure-track) or Associate (Rank III, tenure-track/tenure). Minimum salary is $65,000. Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
