ROLE of the POSITION

UNLV University Libraries seeks nominations and applications for an innovative and collaborative tenure-track/tenured faculty member to serve as the Catalog Metadata Integrity Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Discovery Services, the Catalog Metadata Integrity Librarian will enable faculty and student success by facilitating discovery and access to Library materials (print and online) that are relevant to their learning, teaching and research. The incumbent will ensure timely, comprehensive and effective discovery of all Libraries’ collections by working to improve the integrity of catalog metadata and by performing advanced cataloging of library materials.


The Catalog Metadata Integrity Librarian has a key role in ensuring the integrity of the catalog, and will work with library catalogers to identify and address metadata remediation needs, integrating local practices with the adoption of new or updated standards and vocabularies. In addition to enabling reliable discovery of library materials, the accuracy of metadata in the catalog also affects both collections reporting and collections projects such as withdrawals of complex materials; accordingly, the incumbent will use their acquired knowledge of catalog metadata remediation needs to support work in both areas.


The Catalog Metadata Integrity Librarian will also serve as the lead cataloger for specific portions of the Libraries’ collections to be assigned within the context of the priorities of the Libraries and the Libraries’ strategic plan. Format assignments may include monographs, serials, electronic resources, and/or government documents.


As a faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to engage in scholarly activities and to provide service to the university, community, and profession in accordance with UNLV and University Libraries standards for promotion and tenure. Cataloging and metadata work is a changing area of librarianship, and the Catalog Metadata Integrity Librarian will be expected to actively engage in and participate in the development of best practices and standards in this area of librarianship, and to apply those best practices and standards at UNLV.
