The University of Arizona Libraries’ Office of Digital Innovation and Stewardship (ODIS) seeks a Specialist, Geographic Information Systems that will focus on developing and providing support for geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial data services by developing workshops on GIS for campus, working with instructors on integrating online mapping and visualization into their classes, and responding to GIS and map related reference questions. In addition, this position will support and enhance the Spatial Data Explorer (SDE), a geospatial data portal. The geospatial data portal is a one-stop website for previewing data, querying data, viewing metadata, downloading data and sharing with others. This support will include an assessment and evaluation of long-term sustainability options, identifying enhancements to apply to the SDE software bundle, working with the Technology, Strategy and Services (TeSS) department; and working with faculty and graduate students to identify geospatial data to add to the SDE.

Duties & Responsibilities

    • Provide support for GIS and geospatial data services:
    • Teach instruction sessions related to GIS, workshops on GIS and on specific GIS topics.
    • Work with instructors who want their students to include web maps or visualizations using online mapping applications in their assignments (in collaboration with Research & Learning librarians).
    • Respond to geospatial data and map related reference questions.
    • Develop additional outreach activities, may involve working with other library staff or campus units.
    • Provide assistance to faculty, students, and staff on mobile and data collection applications.
    • Assist in developing map visualizations for campus research projects, in collaboration with the UITS Visualization unit.
    • Provide access to subscribed geospatial data in the Spatial Data Explorer.
    • Recommend geospatial data resources.
    • Update the GIS and Geospatial Data website.
    • Support and enhance the Spatial Data Explorer (SDE), a geospatial data portal:
    • Conduct an assessment and evaluation of the SDE’s long-term sustainability options.
    • Coordinate and update with TeSS the Open Geoportal (OGP) software.
    • Add new data (vector and raster) to the SDE.
    • Follow established criteria and workflow for adding geospatial data and metadata to the SDE.
    • Interface with the campus community including faculty, researchers and graduate students.
    • Engage with the broader university library community involved with geoportals through the GeoBlacklight community.
    • Supervise the GIS Graduate Assistant.
    • Attend campus GIS related meetings and develop contacts with various units involved with GIS and geospatial data to keep informed of GIS activity on campus.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Content Standards for Geospatial Data.
  • Basic programming skills for html, css, javascript, java, Python, or R.
  • Knowledge of WMS and WCS services (Open Geospatial Consortium standards).
  • Comfortable working in a bash/terminal environment.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and planning skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives.
  • Positive attitude and strong demonstration of Our Values: Collaboration, Continuous Learning, Diversity, Innovation, and Integrity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Natural Resources, or a related field and 2 years of GIS experience; OR,
  • Bachelor’s degree, a GIS certificate, and 2 years of GIS experience; OR ,
  • Master’s degree in Geography, Natural Resources, or Geographic Information Systems Technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience trouble-shooting unique research questions
  • Background or experience teaching small and large GIS workshops
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro 2.2 or higher software
  • Knowledge or experience using other GIS software
  • Knowledge or experience with Solr and Geoserver software
  • Experience using PostGIS (geospatial database extender for PostgreSQL software)

Posted Rate of Pay: $50,000-$60,000
