Teaching and Learning Librarians

SMU Libraries seeks to hire two full-time Teaching and Learning Librarians as part of a dynamic instructional team that supports the academic experience and retention of undergraduate and graduate students with the goal of integrating information literacy across the curriculum.

SMU Libraries supports the academic and research goals of faculty and students through a team-based approach. Our Teaching Team and our Research Team are actively building a portfolio of services for faculty in an environment with strong university support and creative leadership. Our vision is for a seamless experience for faculty to engage with a cross-organizational team of information professionals across university departments.

Reporting directly to the Director of Educational Initiatives, both Teaching and Learning Librarian positions will create and deliver innovative instruction services through collaborative groups including the Teaching Team, Online Learning Team, LibApps Team, LibChat Team, Collections Teams, and Instructional Design Team.

These two positions will focus primarily on the social sciences and communications, with specific subject areas to be assigned. The ideal candidates will be student-focused, enterprising, growth-oriented, and enjoy working in a highly collaborative, team-based environment. The candidates should demonstrate openness to exploring and implementing new ideas and practices. SMU is a nationally ranked private research university in Dallas, TX, with eight degree-granting schools. SMU Libraries includes six libraries on the main campus and one library at our satellite location in Taos, NM.

Essential Functions for Both Positions:

· Provide information literacy instruction, assignment design, and consultation services to faculty and students in the social sciences as assigned. One position may cover anthropology, sociology, psychology, women’s and gender studies, human rights, counseling, and dispute resolution. The other position may cover corporate communications, advertising, arts management and entrepreneurship, and economics. Serve as backup for other social science departments.

· Represent liaison departments on the Teaching and Learning Team and the Social Sciences Collections Team. Communicate and advocate to liaison departments.

· Collaborate with the Research and Scholarly Initiatives Team in support of original research for liaison departments.

· Provide general reference and chat service, supported by the LibChat Team.

· Provide information literacy instruction and consultation services as part of the First Year Writing Team.

· Participate in one or more working teams.

· Maintain currency in pedagogy and information literacy for assigned disciplines.

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications

· Completion of an ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library Science by date of hire. A terminal degree, such as a PhD or EdD in a related social science or education discipline, may be substituted for the MLS requirement.

· Experience in instruction of research techniques and information literacy.

· Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience in information literacy instruction in an academic library.

· Experience in reference for the social sciences.

· Knowledge of instructional design, universal design for learning, or critical information literacy.

· Experience in supporting scholarly communications in the social sciences.

· Experience in creating online instructional objects and research guides.

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

· Ability to learn new resources and tools quickly.
